The New Feminine Rising

Venus and its sign represent the feminine in astrological symbolism. So when THE radical rebellious planet - Uranus - goes through the signs of the Zodiac ruled by Venus, there is a radical awakening of how women are defined in society and on this occasion (since May 2018) how they define themselves.

The last time Uranus was in a sign of Venus - Libra - was November 1968 to September 1975. Back then we had Helen Reddy’s anthem (1970) of “I Am Woman” crying out “in numbers too big to ignore” as well as The Female Eunuch by Germaine Greer. As Reddy said: “no one’s going to keep me down again.” And in musical terms, Woodstock of course and Janis Joplin. Back then rights for women was the clarion call. Now it is the Me Too movement. Not so much the 1970s sexual, as the economic equality fought for now and value of status, earned and respected.

In retrospect, the media tend to depict the late 60s and the early 70s as the era of sexual redefinition and free love for women, with abortion on demand and contraception as well as easier to obtain divorce (in Western democracies) slowing women more control over the fertility cycle and the ability to separate from marriage. This is simplistic of course, but has an element of truth. Women entered the workforce in greater numbers, but crucially, mostly in roles lacking status.

But the many ways in which women were defined as second class citizens were not altered and this inequality is now being challenged perhaps more comprehensively by women and also in an increasingly diverse and equality supporting media.

In the 1968-75 period Uranus in Libra focused its ire and revolt on women’s right to equality in relationship and ability to escape bad and unfulfilling ones. Now, in Taurus since 2018, Uranus corresponds with women’s role in society in economic terms and media representation is far more influential. Remember that Venus also symbolises what is seen and valued. And a lot of that value is in the workplace, as well as in how the media portray women. A younger generation is stepping up and using the most Uranian of expressions: “No, I won’t.”

50 years ago the generation of women fighting for their right to equality were born in the 1930s and 1940s, and so had far more conservative parents and a societal power balance that was still highly patriarchal, male dominated. The modern expression of this drive for equality comes from women who were far more likely to be raised in non-traditional family networks and by single parents, as well as, crucially, mother who were born in the 1970s. Democracies are being led by female PMs whose media presence is enhanced and wellrespected. Notably, male world leaders grow increasingly dictatorial and backward looking in their gender politics. But note Biden is a President with Venus next to his Sun in Scorpio, now that Uranus is in Taurus. Whereas we all know Trump had an entirely different attitude to women and has no such Venusian charm.

A new battle of values and a fight for economic independence for those who did not inherit their wealth or influence but have to earn it, is now underway.
